Ingredients

Scale
  • 120 ml fresh orange juice
  • 1 egg
  • 100 g melted butter
  • 150 g granulated sugar
  • Zest of 1 orange
  • 200 g all-purpose flour
  • 10 g baking powder
  • Powdered sugar, for topping
  • Thin fresh orange slices, for garnish

Instructions

  1. Preheat the oven to 180°C and prepare a round cake pan.
  2. Pour the orange juice into a mixing bowl, then add the egg.
  3. Add the melted butter, sugar, and orange zest.
  4. Whisk until the mixture is smooth and well combined.
  5. Sift in the flour and baking powder.
  6. Gently fold with a silicone spatula until you have a smooth batter. Do not overmix.
  7. Pour the batter into the prepared cake pan.
  8. Bake at 180°C for about 30 minutes, until golden and fully risen.
  9. Let the cake cool, then dust with powdered sugar.
  10. Garnish with thin orange slices, cut a slice, and reveal the soft, fluffy crumb.

Notes

  • Bring your egg to room temperature so it emulsifies smoothly with the melted butter and juice.
  • Sift the flour and baking powder together to avoid bitter pockets of leavening.
  • Fold gently once the dry ingredients meet the wet; a light hand preserves the airy texture.
  • Test for doneness with a toothpick inserted into the center; it should emerge clean and dry.
  • Do not overmix the batter, as this develops gluten and creates a tough, rubbery crumb.
  • Do not skip the zest; the juice provides moisture, but the zest carries the intense aromatic oils that define the flavor.
  • Wait until the cake is completely cool before slicing to prevent the delicate crumb from compressing.
  • Store leftovers in an airtight container at room temperature for up to three days.
