Floating Eyeball Jell-O Shots are the ultimate spooky party trick that turns any gathering into a haunted spectacle. These wiggly, crystal-clear cups hide a gummy surprise that stares right back at your guests.

Ingredients

  • Gelatin Base:2 envelopes (about 14 g total) unflavored gelatin powder 1 cup (240 ml) cold water or clear lemon-lime soda 1 cup (240 ml) boiling water 1/2 cup (100 g) granulated sugar or simple syrup 1/2 cup (120 ml) chilled vodka or white rum (substitute with extra cold juice/soda for a mocktail version)Eyeballs & Accents:12–16 pre-made gummy eyeballs or molded spherical milk-gelatin eyeballs (with blue/black food-colored irises) 1 tablespoon grenadine syrup (for optional bloody rim drips)

Instructions

  1. Bloom the Gelatin: Pour cold water or soda into a bowl
  2. evenly sprinkle the gelatin powder across the surface
  3. and let stand for 5 minutes until fully hydrated and swollen. Dissolve the Base: Pour in the boiling water and sugar. Whisk gently until the gelatin granules and sugar dissolve into a completely clear liquid. Add the Alcohol: Stir in the chilled vodka or rum
  4. then let the mixture cool to room temperature (so it doesn’t melt the candy eyeballs).First Pour & Suspend: Pour a shallow layer (about 1/3 full) of the clear mixture into shot cups. Chill in the refrigerator for 20–30 minutes until soft-set. Gently place one eyeball into each cup to anchor it. Top Off & Set: Pour the remaining room-temperature gelatin mixture over the eyeballs to submerge them completely. Refrigerate for at least 3 to 4 hours until fully firm. Finish & Serve: Garnish the rims with subtle grenadine drops right before serving on a platter.

Notes

  • Chill your shot cups before the first pour so the gelatin sets faster and more evenly.
  • Let the mixture cool to true room temperature before adding the eyeballs so the candy does not melt or lose its shape.
  • Place the eyeballs gently onto the soft-set layer rather than dropping them to avoid cracks.
  • Use a small spoon to dot grenadine syrup precisely on each rim for that perfect bloody drip effect.
  • Do not skip the blooming step, because dumping gelatin directly into hot liquid causes lumps that cloud your clear base.
  • Avoid pouring the eyeballs into warm liquid, which can dissolve the candy and ruin the detailed iris colors.
  • Do not rush the soft-set chill; adding eyeballs to liquid gelatin causes them to sink or drift off-center.
  • Never freeze the shots to speed setting, because freezing breaks gelatin’s structure and creates an icy, rubbery texture.
