Thick, soft sugar cookies that bake up tender and plush while perfectly holding their shape, ideal for cutouts and decorating.

Ingredients

  • All-purpose flour, 3 cups
  • Baking powder, 1 1/2 teaspoons
  • Salt, 1/2 teaspoon
  • Unsalted butter, 1 cup softened
  • Granulated sugar, 1 cup
  • Eggs, 2 large
  • Vanilla extract, 2 teaspoons
  • Milk, 2 tablespoons

Instructions

  1. Preheat the oven to 350°F and line baking sheets with parchment paper.
  2. In a bowl, whisk together flour, baking powder, and salt.
  3. In another bowl, cream the butter and sugar until light and fluffy.
  4. Add eggs, vanilla extract, and milk, mixing until combined.
  5. Gradually add the dry ingredients and mix until a soft dough forms.
  6. Roll the dough to about 1/4 inch thickness and cut into shapes.
  7. Place cookies on prepared baking sheets.
  8. Bake just until set, keeping the cookies pale.
  9. Cool completely before decorating or serving.
