Swiss Roll Cake

Swiss Roll Cake is a light, airy sponge cake filled with sweet whipped cream or jam, rolled into a spiral, and dusted with powdered sugar for a beautiful and delicious dessert that’s perfect for any occasion.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 3/4 cup all-purpose flour
  • 1 teaspoon baking powder
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • 4 large eggs, room temperature
  • 3/4 cup granulated sugar
  • 1/4 cup milk
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1/4 cup powdered sugar (for dusting towel)
  • 1 cup heavy whipping cream
  • 3 tablespoons powdered sugar (for filling)
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract (for filling)
  • 1/2 cup fruit jam or preserves (optional)

Instructions

  1. Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C). Line a 10×15-inch jelly roll pan with parchment paper and lightly grease.
  2. In a small bowl, whisk together flour, baking powder, and salt. Set aside.
  3. In a large bowl, beat eggs and granulated sugar with an electric mixer on high speed for 3–5 minutes, until thick and pale. Mix in milk and vanilla extract.
  4. Gently fold in the dry ingredients until just combined, being careful not to deflate the batter.
  5. Pour batter into prepared pan, spreading evenly.
  6. Bake for 10–12 minutes, or until the cake springs back when lightly touched.
  7. While the cake bakes, lay a clean kitchen towel on a flat surface and dust it generously with powdered sugar.
  8. When the cake is done, immediately loosen edges and turn it out onto the prepared towel. Peel off parchment paper.
  9. Starting from a short end, roll the cake up with the towel inside. Let it cool completely, rolled up.
  10. In a chilled bowl, whip heavy cream, powdered sugar, and vanilla extract until stiff peaks form.
  11. Unroll cooled cake and spread evenly with whipped cream or jam (or both, if desired).
  12. Re-roll the cake (without the towel) and place seam side down on a serving plate.
  13. Dust with additional powdered sugar before slicing and serving.

Notes

  • Rolling the cake while warm helps prevent cracks later.
  • For a chocolate version, replace 1/4 cup of flour with cocoa powder.
  • Chill the cake before slicing for neater cuts.
  • Fillings can be customized with flavored buttercream, chocolate ganache, or fresh fruit.
