These classic sugar-coated cookies are soft, buttery, and rolled in a sparkling layer of sugar that gives each bite a delightful crunch. Simple, nostalgic, and perfect for any occasion.

  • 1 teaspoon baking soda
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1 cup unsalted butter, softened
  • 1 cup granulated sugar (plus extra for rolling)
  • 1 large egg
  • 2 teaspoons vanilla extract

Instructions

  1. Preheat oven to 350°F and line baking sheets with parchment paper.
  2. In a medium bowl, whisk together flour, baking soda, and salt.
  3. In a large bowl, cream butter and sugar until light and fluffy. Beat in egg and vanilla.
  4. Gradually mix in the dry ingredients until just combined.
  5. Roll dough into tablespoon-sized balls, then roll in granulated sugar to coat.
  6. Place balls on baking sheets about 2 inches apart and bake for 9–11 minutes, until edges are set.
  7. Cool on baking sheet for 5 minutes before transferring to wire rack to cool completely.

Notes

  • Chilling the dough for 30 minutes helps the cookies hold their shape.
