Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 pound ground beef
  • 1/2 cup breadcrumbs
  • 1/4 cup milk
  • 1 large egg
  • 1 small onion, finely chopped
  • 3 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 cup ketchup
  • 2 tablespoons tomato paste
  • 2 tablespoons brown sugar
  • 1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce
  • 1 tablespoon mustard
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 teaspoon black pepper
  • 4 large sub rolls, split
  • 1 cup shredded mozzarella or provolone cheese

Instructions

  1. Preheat your oven to 375°F.
  2. In a bowl, mix ground beef, breadcrumbs, milk, egg, half the onion, half the garlic, salt, and pepper. Form into meatballs.
  3. Brown meatballs in a heated skillet with a bit of oil, then set aside.
  4. Sauté remaining onion and garlic in the same skillet until soft. Stir in ketchup, tomato paste, brown sugar, Worcestershire sauce, and mustard. Simmer for 1 minute.
  5. Return meatballs to the sauce. Cover and simmer for 10 to 15 minutes.
  6. Place sub rolls on a baking sheet, fill with meatballs and sauce, and top with cheese.
  7. Bake for about 5 minutes until cheese is melted and rolls are toasted.
  8. Serve warm and enjoy.

Notes

  • Toast the sub rolls slightly before assembling to prevent sogginess.
  • Substitute ground beef with turkey or chicken for a lighter version.
  • Leftover meatballs work great in pasta or wraps.
