A classic green bean casserole made with tender green beans, sautéed mushrooms, a creamy homemade sauce, and topped with crispy fried onions. Perfect for holidays or cozy dinners.

  • 1 ½ pounds fresh green beans, trimmed
  • 8 ounces mushrooms, sliced
  • 3 tablespoons unsalted butter
  • 2 tablespoons all-purpose flour
  • 1 ½ cups whole milk
  • ½ cup heavy cream
  • 2 garlic cloves, minced
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • ½ teaspoon black pepper
  • 1 tablespoon soy sauce
  • 1 ½ cups crispy fried onions

Instructions

  1. Preheat oven to 375°F (190°C). Lightly grease a baking dish or oven-safe skillet.
  2. Blanch green beans in boiling salted water for 3–4 minutes. Drain and rinse under cold water. Set aside.
  3. In a large skillet, melt butter over medium heat. Add mushrooms and cook until golden and tender, about 8 minutes.
  4. Add garlic and sauté for 1 minute. Stir in flour and cook for 1 minute.
  5. Slowly whisk in milk and cream. Add soy sauce, salt, and pepper. Cook until thickened, about 5–7 minutes.
  6. Add green beans to the skillet and toss to coat evenly in the sauce.
  7. Transfer mixture to baking dish (if not using oven-safe skillet) and bake uncovered for 20 minutes.
  8. Sprinkle crispy fried onions over the top and bake for an additional 5 minutes until golden and bubbling.
  9. Let rest 5 minutes before serving.

Notes

  • Use frozen green beans if fresh aren’t available — just thaw and pat dry.
  • Add shredded cheese to the sauce for an extra-rich twist.
  • Prepare a day ahead and bake just before serving.
