Crispy, golden brown fried tilapia seasoned with a flavorful spice blend, perfect for a quick and satisfying meal any night of the week.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 4 tilapia fillets (about 6 ounces each)
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 teaspoon black pepper
  • 1 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 1 teaspoon onion powder
  • 1 teaspoon paprika
  • 1/2 teaspoon cayenne pepper
  • 1 cup all-purpose flour
  • 1/2 cup cornmeal
  • 2 large eggs, beaten
  • 23 cups cooking oil (canola or vegetable)
  • Lemon wedges, for serving

Instructions

  1. Heat the oil in a deep frying pan or Dutch oven to 350°F over medium-high heat.
  2. In a small bowl, mix together salt, black pepper, garlic powder, onion powder, paprika, and cayenne pepper. Season both sides of the tilapia fillets.
  3. Set up three bowls: one with flour and cornmeal mixed, one with beaten eggs, and one empty plate for staging.
  4. Dredge each seasoned fillet in the flour mixture, dip in egg, then back into the flour mix. Press lightly to adhere.
  5. Carefully place fillets into hot oil. Fry 3–4 minutes per side until golden brown and cooked through. Do not overcrowd.
  6. Transfer to a wire rack to drain. Sprinkle with a pinch of salt while hot.
  7. Serve hot with lemon wedges, fresh herbs, and your favorite sides.

Notes

  • Pat the fillets dry before seasoning to ensure a crispy crust.
  • Use a thermometer to monitor oil temperature for even cooking.
  • Double dredge for extra crunch.
  • Let cooked fillets rest on a wire rack, not paper towels, to preserve crispiness.
