Fried Cabbage

Fried Cabbage is a quick and flavorful side dish made by sautéing fresh cabbage with onions, garlic, and seasonings until tender and slightly caramelized. It’s a Southern-inspired comfort food that pairs perfectly with meats, potatoes, or cornbread.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 medium head green cabbage, cored and chopped
  • 4 slices bacon, chopped
  • 1 medium onion, diced
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 teaspoon black pepper
  • 1/2 teaspoon smoked paprika (optional)
  • 1 tablespoon apple cider vinegar (optional)

Instructions

  1. In a large skillet over medium heat, cook bacon until crispy. Remove bacon and set aside, leaving the drippings in the skillet.
  2. Add diced onion to the skillet and sauté for 3–4 minutes until softened.
  3. Stir in minced garlic and cook for 30 seconds until fragrant.
  4. Add chopped cabbage to the skillet, stirring to coat in the bacon drippings.
  5. Season with salt, pepper, and smoked paprika. Continue cooking, stirring occasionally, for 10–15 minutes until cabbage is tender and slightly caramelized.
  6. Stir in cooked bacon and apple cider vinegar, if using. Mix well and cook for another minute.
  7. Serve hot as a side dish.

Notes

  • For a vegetarian version, use olive oil or butter instead of bacon drippings.
  • Red cabbage can be substituted for a colorful twist.
  • Pairs well with roasted chicken, pork chops, or sausage.
