A cozy and comforting side dish that blends sweet apples and savory onions in a buttery glaze, perfect for any meal.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 3 large apples (Fuji or Honeycrisp), thinly sliced
  • 2 medium yellow onions, thinly sliced
  • 3 tablespoons butter
  • 2 tablespoons brown sugar
  • 1/2 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt

Instructions

  1. Set a large skillet over medium heat and let it preheat for a couple of minutes.
  2. Melt butter in the skillet, then add the sliced onions. Cook for about 6 to 8 minutes, stirring occasionally, until they begin to soften.
  3. Ensure the skillet is large enough to hold all ingredients in a single layer for even cooking.
  4. Stir in the apple slices, brown sugar, cinnamon, and salt. Toss gently to coat everything in the buttery mixture.
  5. Continue cooking for 10 to 12 minutes, stirring every few minutes, until apples are tender but not mushy and onions are golden.
  6. Optional: Add a splash of apple cider vinegar or fresh thyme for extra brightness.
  7. Spoon onto a plate or serve straight from the skillet. Enjoy warm as a side or topping.

Notes

  • Use a mix of sweet and tart apples for a more complex flavor.
  • Deglaze the pan with apple juice or broth for added richness.
  • Stir gently to keep the apple slices intact.
