Classic French Toast

Classic French Toast is a golden, buttery breakfast favorite made with thick slices of bread soaked in a vanilla-cinnamon custard, then cooked until perfectly crisp on the outside and soft inside.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 8 slices thick-cut bread (brioche or challah recommended)
  • 4 large eggs
  • 1 cup milk
  • 1 tsp vanilla extract
  • 1/2 tsp ground cinnamon
  • 2 tbsp sugar
  • 1/4 tsp salt
  • 2 tbsp butter (for cooking)

Instructions

  1. Preheat a skillet or griddle over medium heat.
  2. In a shallow dish, whisk together eggs, milk, vanilla, cinnamon, sugar, and salt until smooth.
  3. Melt butter in the skillet, swirling to coat evenly.
  4. Dip each bread slice into the custard mixture, soaking for a few seconds per side.
  5. Place bread on skillet and cook 2–3 minutes per side until golden brown.
  6. Repeat with remaining slices, adding more butter as needed.
  7. Serve warm with syrup, powdered sugar, or fresh fruit.

Notes

  • Use day-old bread for the best texture.
  • Keep cooked slices warm in a 200°F oven until serving.
  • For richer custard, replace part of the milk with cream.
