Ingredients

Scale
  • 2 ½ cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 cup unsweetened cocoa powder
  • 2 teaspoons baking powder
  • 1 ½ teaspoons baking soda
  • ½ teaspoon salt
  • 2 ½ cups granulated sugar
  • 3 large eggs
  • 1 cup buttermilk
  • 1 cup vegetable oil
  • 2 teaspoons vanilla extract
  • 1 cup hot water or coffee
  • 3 cups chocolate frosting

Instructions

  1. Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease and line three 8-inch round cake pans with parchment paper.
  2. In a bowl, whisk together flour, cocoa powder, baking powder, baking soda, and salt.
  3. In another bowl, beat sugar, eggs, buttermilk, oil, and vanilla extract until smooth.
  4. Gradually stir in the dry ingredients. Add hot water or coffee and mix until combined.
  5. Divide batter evenly between the prepared pans. Tap lightly to remove air bubbles.
  6. Bake for 30–35 minutes or until a toothpick comes out clean.
  7. Cool in pans for 10 minutes, then transfer to a wire rack to cool completely.
  8. Frost each layer with chocolate frosting. Cover the top and sides evenly.
  9. Slice, serve, and enjoy!

Notes

  • Use high-quality cocoa powder for the richest flavor.
