A heartwarming baked dessert featuring cubes of toasted stale bread soaked in a rich, vanilla and cinnamon scented egg custard.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 8 slices stale white bread, cubed
  • 2 cups whole milk
  • 4 large eggs
  • 1/2 cup granulated sugar
  • 1 tablespoon pure vanilla extract
  • 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • 1/2 cup golden raisins

Instructions

  1. Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C) and lightly grease a 2-quart baking dish.
  2. Place the cubed bread and golden raisins in the baking dish and toss gently to distribute.
  3. In a medium bowl, whisk together the milk, eggs, sugar, vanilla, and cinnamon until well combined.
  4. Pour the liquid mixture evenly over the bread, ensuring all pieces are moistened.
  5. Let the mixture sit for 10-15 minutes to allow the bread to soak up the custard.
  6. Bake for 40-45 minutes or until the custard is set and the top is golden brown.
  7. Let cool slightly before serving.

Notes

  • Use brioche or challah bread for a richer, more buttery flavor.
  • If the bread is fresh, toast the cubes in the oven for a few minutes to dry them out first.
  • Serve warm with a drizzle of maple syrup or a scoop of cream.
