A soulful, creamy sweet potato pie with warm spices, buttery richness, and a flaky crust. This classic Black folks sweet potato pie is smooth, fragrant, and deeply comforting for holidays and Sunday dinners alike.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 2 cups mashed sweet potatoes (about 2 large, roasted and peeled)
  • 1/2 cup unsalted butter, melted
  • 1 cup granulated sugar
  • 1/2 cup brown sugar, packed
  • 2 large eggs, lightly beaten
  • 1/2 cup evaporated milk
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • 1/2 teaspoon ground nutmeg
  • 1/4 teaspoon ground ginger
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • 1 unbaked 9-inch pie crust

Instructions

  1. Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C). Pierce sweet potatoes, place on a baking sheet, and roast until tender, about 45 minutes. Cool slightly, peel, and mash until smooth.
  2. In a large bowl, whisk together warm mashed sweet potatoes and melted butter until silky.
  3. Add granulated sugar, brown sugar, eggs, evaporated milk, vanilla, cinnamon, nutmeg, ginger, and salt. Beat until very smooth.
  4. Place the unbaked pie crust in a 9-inch pie dish. Pour in the filling and smooth the top.
  5. Bake for 55–60 minutes until the center is mostly set with a slight jiggle. Tent crust edges with foil if browning too quickly.
  6. Cool on a wire rack for at least 2 hours to fully set.
  7. Slice and serve plain or with lightly sweetened whipped cream.

Notes

  • Bake sweet potatoes instead of boiling to concentrate natural sweetness.
  • Blend the filling for an ultra-smooth custard texture.
  • Let the pie cool completely before slicing for clean edges.
