Berger cookies are a beloved Baltimore treat with a soft, buttery cookie base topped with a thick layer of glossy chocolate frosting. They’re perfect for any occasion and are sure to satisfy your sweet tooth!

Ingredients

  • Butter: 1 cup, softened – Provides a rich, tender crumb for the cookie base.
  • Sugar: 1 cup – Sweetens the cookies and balances the flavor of the butter.
  • Eggs: 2 large – Adds moisture and helps bind the cookies together.
  • Flour: 2 ½ cups – The base for the cookie dough.
  • Baking Powder: 1 tsp – Helps the cookies rise and become light and airy.
  • Vanilla Extract: 1 tsp – Adds flavor and enhances the overall taste of the cookies.
  • Salt: ¼ tsp – Balances the sweetness of the dough.
  • Chocolate Chips: 1 ½ cups – Essential for making the rich chocolate frosting.
  • Sweetened Condensed Milk: ½ cup – Adds creaminess to the frosting and helps it set.

Instructions

  1. Preheat Your Equipment: Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Line a baking sheet with parchment paper.
  2. Combine Ingredients for the Dough: Cream together the softened butter and sugar until light and fluffy. Add the eggs, one at a time, followed by the vanilla extract. In a separate bowl, whisk together the flour and baking powder, then gradually add it to the butter mixture. Mix until just combined.
  3. Prepare Your Cookie Dough: Chill the dough in the refrigerator for about 30 minutes to make it easier to scoop and shape.
  4. Assemble the Cookies: Scoop tablespoon-sized portions of dough onto the prepared baking sheet. Bake for 10–12 minutes or until the edges are golden and the centers are just set.
  5. Cook to Perfection: Allow the cookies to cool completely on a wire rack.
  6. Finishing Touches: While the cookies cool, prepare the frosting by heating the chocolate chips and sweetened condensed milk in a saucepan until smooth and creamy. Let it cool slightly before spreading over the cookies.
  7. Serve and Enjoy: Frost each cooled cookie with the chocolate mixture and allow it to set. Enjoy your delicious cookies with a cup of coffee or milk!

Notes

  • Chill the dough before baking to prevent the cookies from spreading too much.
  • Let the cookies cool completely before adding the frosting to ensure the frosting doesn’t melt.
  • Use a generous amount of frosting – it’s the key feature of Berger cookies!
